It’s a Friday-Thursday

Yahoo! We’ll be all packed & ready to head out tomorrow afternoon when Rusty’s finished with his Friday classes. We’re breaking it up with an overnight in Escanaba, then heading on to Sault Ste Marie, ONT, on Saturday.

The last time Rusty & I were in Canada was in 1984. We took the northerly route from Oregon to Wisconsin so Rusty could meet my mom. We crossed back into the USA at International Falls and Customs did not look kindly upon these two youngsters who drove 2500 miles across Canada with only a souvenir t-shirt to show for it. They tore our car apart!

I dunno… do these two look suspicious to you?? haha. (They didn’t find anything!!)

In Other News

on Tuesday I had a fleeting thought about taking a photo of Maddy’s blanket panel — pergola lights are coming on just past 7:30 now — but it’s getting light enough in the morning now to take a quick pic, so I thought that I’d just do it then… when I’d have a little more to show, anyway. Alas, I forgot that Tuesday is SHOGUN night, thus no knitting! And there was some severe sleep interruption in the wee hours of Wednesday, so I forgot all about it yesterday. (Large police presence down on the path/creek w/spotlights, flashlights, drones — no idea what was going on, but I’m pretty sensitive/aware of light in the middle of the night, so I was awake for about an hour.)

I snapped a photo this morning, though… with residual sidewalk chalk from the kids’ visit over the weekend. I think I’m just about to mid-August.

Speaking of Maddy…

…she & Viv fostered a couple of kittens, and have decided to keep them! She sent this photo the other day, “Here is my little junior detective buddy while we play Nancy Drew.” I’m not sure if that junior detective is Lil Shep or Fern, but aren’t they adorable??

Meanwhile

Our Airbnb host shared MarineTraffic.com with us & I’m so looking forward to watching some big boats go by — they’re going to be so close! If I don’t pop in sooner, I’ll catch up next week! Have a great weekend!

Weekending

Weekending: Chop-chop

Actually, it was more like buzz-buzz…

Ali & Davy came over on Friday morning and we drove out to Hortonville to check out Kate’s new Dovetail digs at Standard Projects in Hortonville, which also houses a custom frame shop & vintage clothing store.

From there, we walked down to Alley Cat Coffeehouse for lunch, which was delicious!

On the way, we noticed a barbershop…

How it started…

…and just happened to have someone in our party in desperate need of a haircut!

He sat very well & was so cooperative.
So adorable!

It was Davy’s first time in an actual barber’s chair!

I had all the kids for a few hours on Saturday — another nice day, so we spent a fair bit of time outside. Kate & Junah pumped up tires & hopped on bikes for the first spin around the ‘hood of the season. With road construction starting soon on the other half of the neighborhood, the route will be pretty limited for the rest of the summer.

My electrician had scheduled work just a few blocks away on Saturday, and stopped by afterward to install a receptacle for our new range hood, which Rusty & I installed on Sunday!

I have dreamt of this day for years, and I’m so happy to finally have a hood! It can’t be ducted outside, which would be ideal, but I have installed carbon filters… and it just has to be better than nothing!

What a PITA installation, though. Nowhere in the directions did they address connecting power, which turned out to be more than a little frustrating. Luckily, patience reigned! After a failed Round One, we came up with a plan, took a break, and then dove in to finish (we ended up detaching the chimney from the ceiling mount in order to feed the cord up & plug it into the outlet).

Other than that, a little putzing, a cat nap, some knitting. I had to rip out several rows of Maddy’s panel due to a mistake in counting that was throwing off “the curve,” but I got back on track and am sailing along.

Hope you all had a great weekend!

Unraveled Wednesday / Knit & Read

Unraveled Wednesday: 12 Weeks

I’m joining Kat & the Unravelers for Unraveled Wednesday! Just a quick update today… hopefully I’ll have a bit more to share (with better photos) next week.

KNITTING

I’m currently knitting the weather for 12th week of Madeleine’s life.

We turned on SHOGUN just as I was about to do the “daytime” section of this day/row of July 1991 — it was 90F — and y’know I can’t knit and watch that at the same time!

READING

I’m still working on The Devil’s Cloth: A History of Stripes, but have downloaded the audio for the next Read With Us book, How To Say Babylon. I love a good memoir.

IN OTHER NEWS

I had a snow day today. It probably wasn’t really necessary, as we didn’t get anywhere near the amount predicted, but it was the wettest, heaviest snow I’ve seen in a long time. Brutal. And it was also very windy overnight & this morning. Luckily, we haven’t even had a blip in our power but there are others in the area who have been without power since early this morning.

I woke up very early this morning, with nagging thoughts about the weather, road conditions & work, and had a hard time getting back to sleep… until I knew for sure that I wasn’t going in, and then I slept for another couple of much-needed hours.

And I’ve mostly been putzing. It seemed like a great day for a roast, so I just got that in the oven. It’s the first time that I’ve actually used my new range, other than just testing buttons, dials, and functions — like knocking on the oven door to turn on the light (still tickled by that one and do it every once in a while just because I can).

Weekending

Weekending: Change of Plans

My Friday plans with Malina were thwarted & I need to reschedule — dates with both her & Ginny. So, instead, I had a quiet Home Alone Pajama Day & another very productive day in my workroom.

Several months ago, I bought tickets to attend a Green Bay Gamblers hockey game, with the thought that Junah might enjoy it — and that date came up on Saturday. I picked him up at noon and we headed up to Lambeau Field for lunch & a quick visit to the Pro Shop.

The Lombardi Trophy

Then we went over to a nearby barbershop where I’d made an appointment for a much-needed haircut!

The kid cleans up pretty good! He kept saying, “I love my hair!”

From there, we stopped at a Target… for pomade (and maybe a LEGO set), so he can style it just like his barber, Julian, did!

We still had a couple of hours before the puck dropped, so went over to the Neville Public Museum.

Some of the exhibits haven’t changed since we took the kids in the ’90s.

We had fun looking at some of the collections… random stuff like political buttons, cameras, shoes, clothing & hats, watches, toys, and an actual “redcoat.” There were a couple of art exhibits, and some more science-y exhibits, too, and an impressive model of Lambeau Field made from LEGO.

We found some awesome rainbow socks to go along with the new Nikes that we found (on clearance) at the Packers Pro Shop. Stylin’!

Then it was time to head over to the Resch Center for the hockey game. It was the first for both of us… and totally my idea. I’ve wanted to attend a hockey game ever since I saw LOVE STORY in 1970… so, bucket list item for me.

And, it was SUPER MARIO NIGHT, so something of interest for Junah, too.

We had great seats — Row C — and there was a lot of action! It was interesting to see where all the players were from — Ukraine, Sweden, Germany, many from various Canadian provinces, and the US, of course (MN, MI, NJ, MA mostly, it seemed) — and they were all super young, most about 20.

There was a huge brawl! I was struck by the aftermath of sticks & helmets strewn across the ice — I wasn’t quick enough with my phone, and some had already been picked up when I snapped this shot (including a broken stick). Anyway, I overhead someone behind us saying, “I knew that was going to happen when the goalie got sprayed — doesn’t matter if it was intentional or not.” And it was an immediate reaction — all of a sudden there were all after each other, the four refs were trying to pry apart players, I saw on replay that one guy practically pulled the shirt off another. It was something else! Luckily, there was no blood or any injury during the game.

Alas, the gamblers lost by one point in OT, but it was super fun & affordable & I’d definitely go again!
