Dog gone it

Kate dropped Kai off on Monday for a “get to know you” session at a nearby daycare/boarding place for a few hours… because at some point she’s going to need it.

It wasn’t evident right away, but Kai soon started favoring her right rear leg — hardly putting weight on it at all. She didn’t seem in pain at all, never barked or whined.

After calling at least a dozen vets, Kate was finally referred to a place in Green Bay that does only urgent care.

An x-ray confirmed that Kai has a broken toe. Six to eight weeks in this get-up… except that she chewed the cone right off her head last night and started going at the bandage a bit.

Poor thing. Good healing juju… and any advice for dealing with this situation is very welcome!

  1. We bought an inflatable neck thing for our dog instead of the cone. It was easier for her to get around and eat with it instead of the cone. And the sounds echoing thru the cone drove her nuts. They have them at most pet stores and amazon

  2. Oh my gosh — I’ve never heard of a dog having a broken toe (but, why not?!). Poor girl. My only advice, other than seconding Aimee’s on the inflatable (which I’ve seen called a ‘donut), is to engage her mind with ‘puzzles’ so she doesn’t get bored. We do this with our partially paralyzed dog in the winter when she can’t be outside and gets rather restless. There are all sorts of nifty ‘treat puzzles’ out there, and you don’t have to fil them with high-cal treats (especially when she can’t exercise…). I often use popcorn. If you google ‘dog food puzzles,’ a whole bunch will come up. Sending healing wishes!

  3. Oh Kai! You poor baby! I am seconding the inflatable neck ring versus the cone that worked well on a small dog, but it looks like Kai is quite wiggly… and not very small… so I am not sure that would stop her from getting at that cast. I might call the vet for some suggestions (they will have loads of ideas, I am sure!!)
