Kaffe Fassett: The Power of Pattern

Kaffe on my mind! This is going to be a wordless post except to say this is from the exhibit Kaffe Fassett: The Power of Pattern at London’s Fashion+Textile Museum, which I visited on Nov. 1, 2022 (and never blogged about). We did a lot of other things on that short trip, but this was the main thing… and a little overwhelming! The photos are mostly all “gallery style,” so click to make big & scroll through, if you’d like… the use of color & technique is incredible.

It wasn’t all quilts…

…besides clothing, there was also a lot of needlepoint (the worst lighting in that area, so no photos).

There was a VERY interesting look at the process of producing patterns in different colorways.

Thanks for the indulgence. I know this type of thing isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but this reformed “Neutral Girl” just can’t get enough color & pattern these days!

Weekending

Weekending: The last of October

The weather continues to be mild… the sun is shifting…

The Garden Room positively glows in the morning — especially when so many golden leaves are still holding on outside. The amaryllis were brought up from the basement last weekend (on the square table, among other things), and there are already two with visible leaves! I think it’s a little late (oops!) to expect blooms at Christmas, but hey… I’ll take blooming flowers at any time this winter.

That sunlight also illuminated my breakfast on Saturday morning.

It was as delicious as it looks.

After work on Friday, I stopped at an estate sale that advertised “yarn galore” and “fabric galore.” I arrived a little after 4p and the sale had been going on since 9a… and there was still yarn & fabric galore. And it was the good stuff! So many kits, books, magazines. It was mind-boggling, really, and also a bit pricey for an estate sale (IMHO)… but it was quality stuff, organized & kept in excellent condition, so I get it. There wasn’t anything that I had to have. But everything under $50 was half-price on Saturday, so I went again.

The only yarn I was interested in, really, was some Rowan Felted Tweed… but I didn’t really need it, y’know? Luckily, it was gone by the time I arrived. There was still plenty of Kaffe Fassett fabric, though, and that’s what really caught my eye, and what I returned for. There’s my array — the cuts are all a yard or less. I have no plan.

I never wrote about my Jet-setter Birthday Trip to London two years ago… a few weeks after we returned from our epic island-hopping trip to Scotland (which I also never wrote about). The trip to London was quick — I flew over on Sunday, Oct. 30th & back on Thursday, Nov. 3rd. The main impetus for the trip was a show at the Fashion + Textile Museum, Kaffe Fassett: The Power of Pattern.

That’s a snippet of the main exhibit floor — pattern, indeed! Anyway, I think I might have a few fat quarters of KF fabric from a while back, and now I have more. Honestly, it just makes me happy to look at it! Instant mood-lifter.

Here’s a mood for ya, a text message from the other day…

Apparently, FU means the same thing as STOP! haha. Naturally, I reported it as junk. Just over a week of this to tolerate. Hang in there, y’all!!

Among all the other things going on around here this summer, my washing machine’s bearings went bad. It’s a 10yo machine and my service guy didn’t think it was worth replacing — he said that it’s a common occurrence with front-loading machines & their lifespan is right around 10 years. He also said that I didn’t have to replace it right away… it wasn’t a fire hazard & I could run the machine as-is until it died.

So, for most of the summer, every time the washer went into the final spin cycle, it sounded like an airplane was landing in the laundry room. So loud!! Thank goodness there’s a door on that room. Recently, I was also hearing some extra clicks & clacks when the drum was rotating. Having previously hauled baskets of sopping wet laundry to the laundromat (dripping all the way) on more than one occasion, I knew it wasn’t something I ever wanted to do again… no matter what my husband thought.

On Sunday morning, I did the deed, the kicker being that my new washer could be delivered on Wednesday (yesterday), which just happened to be my day off this week!

The delivery people installed it, ran a cycle, and hauled my old one away (I’d have to wait until April to put it on the curb, and… well, no.) Then I did a load & thought that the water temp was a bit higher than desired (judging by the temp of the clothes when I went to put them in the dryer), so I jiggled the water valves… and I guess I jiggled them all the way closed, at least according to the error code that I kept getting, and it took me a while to remember Lefty-Loosey, Righty-Tighty.

There’s a lot going on… my brain’s a little jumbled. haha.

Anyway, it was while troubleshooting that I decided, OK, I’ll scan the QR Code & CONNECT! You may recall that I had to buy a new range a few months ago, too, which is also “connectable,” but I had/have so far resisted. Now that I’m connected to my washing machine, we’ll see if I can continue resisting. It really seems like WHY??? but I have to say that I didn’t mind getting a notification on my phone when the washer was done.

I also have some lightbulbs that I can control with an app — color temp, dimming, schedules & routines. The ones I use most regularly are in a lamp by my chair in the living room and for the back porch. I also have one that I put into my bedside lamp when we’re away because I like it to go on/off while we’re gone. I can get notifications of events, too.

My car has a remote start feature that I love to use in the winter, but I’d risk asphyxiation in the (detached) garage because we don’t have a garage door opener button in the house. Thanks to one of the guys I work with, I learned about a garage door app (which required some hardware, of course), but it was a breeze & now I can open the garage door with my phone when I start the car. And, I can’t see the actual garage door from any vantage point in my house, so now it’s set to automatically close every night at 9 or 10 pm. No more leaving the garage door open all night! Naturally, I can get notifications of those events, too.

So far, I think those are all the THINGS that I’m connected to in my house. I had a Google dot thing for a while that I could talk to, but that was weird. And I’ve pondered a video doorbell (long story, but we don’t have a functioning doorbell anymore & it would be a big PITA to wire a new one)… I really wouldn’t mind seeing what happens outside in the middle of the night. I’ve pondered a camera for the back yard, too, for the same reason. Oh, and a Bird Buddy is still on my wish list. Oh wait… there’s all the Bluetooth stuff, too; a couple of soundbars, a turntable/speaker (at my house & at Ann’s), my fitbit, earbuds, hearing aids!

I know I’m not even as connected as some people… or as connected as I could be. How about you??

And now, randomly, because I don’t have a photo of my new washing machine… a screenshot of part of a chat with my sister Ann last night:

Well… that’ll get you thinking about the future!! Holy moly.

Uncategorized

Well, hello!

It’s been a wild & crazy time over here! Events, kiddos, yard/house work, a quick get-away…

I refreshed & reactivated my Airbnb listing right on time (though a couple of photos need to be re-done), and welcomed my first guests on the 11th — and they’re returning this weekend! I’ve had some bookings for football games, as well, and another woman who will be staying in a couple of weeks for the SIXTH time while she visits for her dad’s birthday.

I really love the new living room area. (Click on any photo in the gallery to scroll thru with better views.) I found that pillow at a resale shop & it couldn’t be more perfect!

We installed our new sign, and spruced up the entry porch — I still have a string of lights to install in there. It’s so colorful & inviting (if I may say!).

The former living room is now a… boy, I keep changing what it’s called… entry, library, workspace, studio, music room (or any combination). I think it’s going to be a music room/studio. I even have some art supplies on the way, because… it’s The Artist’s Perch!

The bedroom is truly a restful space where it feels like you’re up in the trees, overlooking the ravine/valley. In addition to having the floors refinished, I bought a comfy new mattress.

The kitchen floor was also refinished, and we switched the direction that the fridge/freezer doors open — which I’m still not used to — and pared down some of the decor/clutter.

I pared down, rearranged & replaced a lot of the dish-/glassware, too.

It’s been fun, but I sure was out of practice & even a little anxious! It’s not like I haven’t continued to take care of Annie’s house & guests all this time. haha.

Kiddos!

I had Malina overnight on a Friday, then Junah & Ginny came over on Saturday and we all went down to the nature center for a geocaching event, which we all really enjoyed.

We found directions for an F1 car made with Knex on Instructables that Junah wanted to build — it was huge! I was happy to assist, fishing for pieces, putting together elements. It’s been a while since we tackled a big project like that.

They were all over again last weekend for a while and we found another car to build — Davy helped us look (and he liked everything!). Coloring is fun, too.

I updated my picture gallery at work the other day.

Ali’s an aide in Davy’s class, so she got a school picture this year, too!

In between everything else, we grabbed the dog, found a dog-friendly Airbnb, and took a little trip up north to Eagle River for a couple of days.

We got a little taste of fall while we were there (the weather continues to be incredibly warm here) — it was chilly, but oh so beautiful! There was even a dense little snow shower for a minute or two!

In other news… early voting starts today in my neck of the woods, so we’ll be doing that today or tomorrow! Only two weeks to Election Day, and I so hope I get to say the words President-elect Harris on my birthday!

I can stop…

…whenever I want to!

I’ll run out of yarn soon, so then I’ll have to find something else. (Ravelry project info here.)

It’s been a week, y’all! I had one of my long/vacation weekends, much of which was spent cleaning & arranging/rearranging the upstairs apartment, or thinking about the upstairs apartment, or shopping for the upstairs apartment — things are getting crossed off the list! I met my self-imposed deadline & it’s re-listed with two new bookings so far. There’s still stuff to do — acquire a coffee table/ottoman or two & take better photos. It’s been a while… I felt like a newbie with my DSLR (not to mention Photoshop).

Kai is still on a “restful” schedule because of her broken toe, but she’s on the downhill slide & hardly favoring it at all, so we took a slightly longer-than-usual-hike around the Butterfly Pond at High Cliff State Park the other day.

We’re having a stretch of incredibly beautiful weather — cool mornings, sunny & warm days, rain only at night (if at all). It’s same-same as far as I can see in my weather app.

Do you use Google Photos? Whenever I open the app, there are some featured items to scroll through at the top — a recent “stylized” photo, a video or two, a themed carousel (most recently “Tasty Treats”) (yum!), and always lots of memories from years past, each one with a collage of the featured photos.

Yesterday, it was the camping trip that Junah & I took three years ago! Oh my goodness, that was so much fun!! And, y’know, I’m still pretty chuffed at having done it all by myself, including backing Ducky into the campsite. I’m sad that we haven’t camped at all this year (a packed calendar & thwarted plans).

Have a great weekend!
