3.3

It’s the first day of the first month that I’m eligible to apply for Social Security (for my desired timeframe)… and I did.

They want a copy of our marriage certificate, though, and I can’t put my hands on it, so I have filled out my request and a check for $7.75 to get a certified copy by mail. I’m usually pretty good about organizing/filing important papers, so I’m a little miffed, but I don’t have time or energy to spend on that kind of thing!

We have a lot of rain and even a little snow in the Tuesday-Wednesday forecast, and a few “cooler” days after that, but the forecast shows upper 50s next week and I.am.here.for.that! We couldn’t resist plucking a couple bunches of tulips from the huge display at the store the other day.

  1. It’s probably well worth the $7.75! You want to start collecting while there is still money in Social Security and before someone causes any havoc with it. We still don’t have Real ID licenses in NJ, but if I can ever get an appointment, I know I’ll need our marriage license (and every other piece of id that I can come up with) for that. Good luck and enjoy the tulips!

  2. I know what you’re saying about being miffed… But the way I try to look at these things is, “How much is an hour of my time worth?” And I KNOW an hour of your time is worth [more than]$7.75!
And I agree with Bonny. Collect while it’s there!!

  3. We had a long conversation here about the “future” of SS… My full retirement age is a couple of years out, but the increase is not that significant. So I began the process last November (what a lot of hoops that all was) with the hope that I could begin with the January payment (ha!) I need to get a certified copy of my marriage license as well AND a certified … with the raised seal… copy of my divorce decree. (Because the “True Certified Copy” that worked for my passport was not enough for SS) Anyways, my first payment will hopefully come later this month… I am not holding my breath. If it does, it does.

  4. We are in the midst of the same process here, Vicki. We had been planning to wait for a few more years, but . . . like so many of us, we’ve decided to get going on it earlier than later. Sigh . . .

  5. Considering what things cost these days, that fee for your marriage certificate is a bargain — it’s certainly less than a dozen eggs!
