4.2: Unraveled Wednesday

I’m joining Kat & the Unravelers for Unraveled Wednesday!

But first: On, Wisconsin! FORWARD we go!!

I can’t tell you how happy & relieved we were last night. First, to watch Senator Cory Booker’s record-breaking filibuster (gift article) — well, not all of it, but WOW!! And then, even before bedtime, Wisconsin’s Supreme Court race was handily won by Susan Crawford and Brad Schimel conceded, saying “you gotta accept the results.” And thank god for every bit of that. Crawford even won in my mostly red county by a very slim margin.

The image above, now viral and representing Wisconsin all over the world, was created by J. J. Sedelmaier — a UW grad, noted animator, illustrator, designer, author and film director/producer, known for co-creating the “Saturday TV Funhouse” segment—including The Ambiguously Gay Duo and The X-Presidents—on the TV series Saturday Night Live and over 500 other TV and advertising projects. On, Wisconsin. (Note: This info from Wisconsinology‘s FB page, which I haven’t been able to confirm. Kudos to the artist!)

In addition, I finished our taxes and cleaned the bathroom! It was a good day.

KNITTING:

Except for blocking, my first Hitchhiker is finished!

I lost a game of Yarn Chicken by about 12″, but pulled a leftover ball from the pot o’ scraps to finish the job. I suppose I could have wound off a bit until I hit a more colorful area, but no one (except you & me) will ever know or even notice that those last half-dozen or so stitches are different.

The weather is utterly craptastic today… I’ll get a better photo after blocking. I really love how intense the colors are at the beginning, they’re not quite as intense as it progressed. Oh, it’s 42 teeth!

  • Ravelry Project Page: Hitchhiker (my first!)
  • Pattern: Hitchhiker by Martina Behm
  • Yarn: Fingering/Sock – handdyed, of unknown origin
  • Needles: US 3 (3.25 mm) long, straight, aluminum needles
  • Start to Finish: March 4 to April 1, 2025 (tho yet to be blocked)

Wow, I had to go back to December of ’23 to find a post where I’d actually finished something.

READING:

I’m currently reading Lights on a Ground of Darkness by Ted Kooser, which was mentioned last month by Kat, and then again by Bonny… two tipped the scale & my order was placed. I’ve literally just begun, but I can already tell that it’s right up my alley.

  1. This is a terrific post! I was so proud of Wisconsin voters (they couldn’t be bought!) when I saw the results this morning and that cheese-destroyed Tesla is iconic. Your Hitchhiker is wonderful and I couldn’t tell that you lost at yarn chicken. I thought of you while I was reading Lights; the family remembrances seemed like it would be right up your alley.

  2. That might be the best photo I’ve seen on the internet in quite some time! Well done, Wisconsin, you clearly understood the assignment! I love your hitchhiker and your solution for running out of yarn is invisible to me.

  3. Ack, Blogger has stopped telling me again when you have a new post, and it looks like I’ve missed a lot! So happy for all of you in Wisconsin. Not only did Susan Crawford win, but I’m also seeing reports about unheard-of voter turn out and a shift toward Democrats across the state. Let’s hope this victory is the first of many similar ones across the country!

The Hitchhiker looks amazing! If you hadn’t told us about that bit of extra yarn, no one would be the wiser.

  4. I was so utterly delighted by you amazing Wisconsinites! Take that you bully billionaires… your money is not good here! Hahaha!

And your Hitchhiker!! It is stunning! Perfect! Utterly wearable!! Now, inquiring knitter minds want to know… when will you be casting on your next one?

Lights on a Ground of Darkness is a book that belongs on every self in America… it is so readable, so very relatable, and Mr. Kooser is truly “every person in America’s” voice!

  5. Vicki . . . I cried when I saw the results of the election. I am so happy for all of you . . . for all of US. And Cory Booker? Oh, my. What a HERO. My heart felt so much better yesterday. And your Hitchiker is lovely! (Personally, I think switching out the yarn there at the end just makes it all the better.) XO

  6. Your State gave us all HOPE! Cory Booker is a caring politician (a misnomer?) and he also gives us hope. Knitting and reading are keeping me together. Literally and figuratively. LOL

  7. I think there’s momentum! finally… in a positive direction … AND you’ve (almost) finished a Hitchhiker. It’s a good week! (I know the tariff news has been crazy, but it’s early days … tbd still, and I’m not going to let go those good week vibes)

  8. What a week! And yay for the BIG cheese – LOVE that photo. Fabulous poll results this week and Cory Booker!! Your Hitchhiker is so pretty. I loved Lights on a Ground of Darkness.
