I do like a nice cozy rabbit hole… and I’ve fallen deeper into the Kaffe Fassett book hole. I have a few books of my own, some that were my sister Sharon’s (I don’t know if she ever knit a Fassett pattern), and I’ll always pick one up at a thrift store.

Still, the man has published A LOT of books! I’ve been perusing some used book sites (concentrating on knitting, because there’s also a slew of quilting & needlepoint books).

A close-up view of two Kaffe Fassett knitting books, 'Kaffe's Classics' and 'Glorious Color', featuring colorful designs and patterns. One cover displays a smiling man wearing a vibrant sweater surrounded by a geometric backdrop.

These two arrived at my house yesterday. Paging through Kaffe’s Classics, I found this:

Handwritten birthday message inside a book, saying 'Happy Birthday 1995. I Love You Always! Your Husband's, Jayne.'

Dreaming In Color was also once a gift to someone, but the inscription didn’t make me laugh like this one did. I love that Wayne identified himself as “Your Husband.” Wouldn’t the recipient have known that he was her husband?? How many people named Wayne would give her that book for her birthday??

But the best thing I found in that book (besides the old Far Side calendar page) (not pictured) was THIS:

Yes, I’ve already checked Ravelry to see if I could identify this project. It’s possible the maker gave up because, though her chosen colors are pretty, there sure isn’t much contrast.

I love it, though. And that vest. And finding things in books!!

  1. What a fun rabbit hole! When I saw Rebecca Romney last month (the rare book collector/dealer who wrote The Jane Austen Bookshelf), she talked about how cool she thinks “ownership markings” (my phrase, I can’t remember what she called them) are … inscriptions, book plates, even a simple name written on the inside cover. She gave me a new appreciation for how those markings add to the story of a book. I do wish Wayne had addressed his wife by name in his inscription!

  2. I love that “your husband” signature… he is telling her that he belongs to her. Dear Wayne… you are a true treasure! Thanks so much for sharing these fantastic books ( I have some Kaffe quilt books that are just swoon-worthy… someday, I am going to tackle one of them!)

  3. When I buy used books, I always love it when I find interesting things written or tucked into them. LOLing at “your husband” — perhaps the recipient was a bit forgetful?

  4. I do love found objects in used books. You have some treasure there and so did Wayne’s wife. I once owned Kaffe’s Classics but passed it on. I give my grandchildren and nieces and nephews books as gifts and always inscribe them, adding a personal touch. My grands insist that whoever reads a book to them, read the inscription.
