This month — the one before, too — has been such a weird mix of emotion & activity… all of it at warp speed! I promise I’ll pick up the couple of threads that I’ve dropped (Nashville, Omaha).

Right now, I just need to get started again, and the easiest way to do that is with what’s current.

On Friday, while Ali took the boys to the Polar Express at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay…

Two girls standing in front of a green door decorated with gold accents, each holding a door handle. One girl is wearing a black jacket and colorful leggings, while the other is in a colorful coat and striped leggings.

…I took the girls to see Wicked: For Good — and they stayed for a sleepover! I’d never seen Wicked, in any way shape or form, but we ended up watching it on Saturday morning, so now I’m caught up!

A grandmother sitting in a chair, watching two girls, one in a colorful skirt and the other in pajamas, as they gather around her in a sunlit room filled with plants and cozy furniture.

Rusty took this photo as we were hanging out in the Garden Room on Saturday morning (I’m in my usual morning spot).

Two girls engaged in a morning activity; one is eating cereal from a bowl while the other writes in a colorful booklet titled 'When I Grow Up'.

Same scene from my point of view.

I sold my car to Kate last week and have to get going to find a replacement, which I’ll need by the end of next month, for sure, when she & Kai take off for an extended period away — starting with a few weeks in Arizona.

I won’t be test driving anything today, though. We’ll be shopping for our traditional/non-traditional T/thanksgiving meal, depending on how you look at it. It’ll be fairly low-key day, as we’re in the midst of some major cleaning, reorganizing & rearranging — all in hopes of getting the tree up in time for Ali & the kids to come help decorate sometime over the weekend.

A handwritten grocery list on a notepad, featuring various food items including pine nuts, fresh gooseberries, mushrooms, and ingredients for a Thanksgiving meal, placed on a colorful book cover.

Anyway, we’re big fans of chef Sean Sherman — his restaurant, Owamni, in Minneapolis, and his cookbooks: The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen and Turtle Island: Foods and Traditions of The Indigenous Peoples of North America. Turtle Island is a brand new release. It’s a gorgeous, very readable book about history & tradition, and Sherman is an engaging storyteller; the recipes are organized by region. We’ll have some challenges sourcing some of the ingredients, but he usually offers options, and we’ll do the best we can! That’s tonight’s mission!

I’ll be back tomorrow with a knitting update.

  1. It’s lovely to read a post from you, especially with such interesting things in it. I’ve never seen Wicked in any form but might watch it on Friday while I knit in my pajamas. Your garden room spot looks perfect; I would be tempted to sit there for quite a while. I will definitely look into those cookbooks as they sound like something I would use and quite interesting to read. I have lots of venison backstrap in my freezer and would be happy to share, but I’m a bit too far away. I wish you good luck in finding ingredients and also good luck when you test drive cars. (Buying a car is one of my least favorite things!)

  2. Just beginning again is the answer, isn’t it. That is just exactly what I needed to hear. I am looking forward to your updates on your travels though! And your knitting!! I did get a MDK Kafe striped wrap kit in the MDK color way and I want to cast on… but I really want to wear it so I will wait a bit before beginning… iykyk. It is so good to see you here! And good luck vehicle shopping!

  3. Making Indigenous recipes feels very right at Thanksgiving! I’ll be interested to hear how it goes (and I’m going to look into these recipes some more). I still haven’t watched Wicked, but we have tickets to the stage show in January, so perhaps we should put that on the to-do list for this weekend.

  4. I love that photo of you and the girls, there’s something really wonderful about your expression as you look at them. And I’m glad to see you back, I know you’ve been through it lately, but jumping back in is wonderful. I hope your Thanksgiving meal was great, it sure sounds delicious!
