Three Things on Thursday — My NYT Year in Games!

Thing 1. The graphic.

Infographic summarizing the New York Times Year in Games for 2025, displaying statistics such as most-played game, average guesses to solve Wordle, top connections category solved first, pangrams count, genius count, and longest strands streak.

Those aren’t even my favorite NYT Games!

Thing 2. I don’t know about you (if you even play these games), but there’s an order… I usually start with Spelling Bee, but don’t have the patience (or maybe the will) that I once had for that game, so I usually find a few words and then move on. Second on the list is the Mini Crossword (unless I already did it the night before). Third is either Connections or Wordle (I’ve been switching that up). Then Letter Boxed, then Strands, and finally Pips!

Thing 3. Those last three — Letter Boxed, Strands & Pips — are my favorites, and I’d love some stats on those! Maybe next year!

  1. I’m not sure I’m smart enough or patient enough for anything besides mini crossword and wordle (and I didn’t get wordle this morning)! Wishing you a Genius Level 2026 in Games.

  2. I’m a bit bitter that the free version doesn’t include the mini — that was always my favorite! I do Wordle, then Connections, then Strands.

  3. I share the NYT games with Tom . . . but both of us start the day with them. Tom does Spelling Bee (like you, I grew weary of that one – but Tom loves it), Strands, and Pips (his favorite). Mine are the Mini, Wordle, and Connections (always in that order). Later in the day – usually as my mid-day break/”treat” – I do the Crossword. (I started doing the Crossword during the pandemic and I was terrible at it. Even the Monday Crossword. Now, though? I am a PRO. Even the Sunday Crossword.) I love that so many of us play these games “together/apart” every day. XO

  4. I’m a huge Spelling Bee fan. I get to Genius everyday and often can get QB with a little help from the letter grid. I do the crossword nearly daily (M-F) and Wordle. Connections isn’t one that works with my brain. Ugh

  5. First thing every morning and in this order: Wordle, Pips (easy and medium), Strands, Connections, and the Mini. I take a peek at the Pips hard and sometimes I do it and sometimes I grimace and close that tab!
