Weekending

Most of Friday afternoon & all of Saturday was spent stripping wallpaper in the upstairs bathroom.

Here’s a “before” photo from a few years ago. I’m standing in another doorway, and the other two walls are completely papered except for a built-in cabinet (just barely visible at far right) & a window to the left of it.

A vintage bathroom featuring a white basin sink, blue-framed mirror, dark blue bathtub, white shower curtain, and beige walls with floral wallpaper.

Like so…

A partially renovated bathroom featuring a vintage freestanding bathtub, a modern shower stall, and a toilet. There is a black cabinet with towels inside, a small ladder, and a window with sheer white curtains.

…minus most of the wallpaper at this point. As of late yesterday, everything around the tub has been repainted because the tub refinisher arrived early this morning!

He’s grinding out the rusted areas (there are lots of tiny rust spots… and some bigger ones… and some that had previously been “fixed”), then he’ll clean the tub. Tomorrow, a new resin finish will be applied/sprayed, he’ll caulk, and then it has to cure — it’ll have a good two-and-a-half weeks before anyone will be up there.

Ali is chomping at the bit to come over & help with the painting. There are two other rooms that I’d really like to refresh before the next guests arrive, too, but we’ll see… there are priorities.

  1. It looks great so far! Our tub could stand to be refinished, but I guess I didn’t really know that was a thing. If I’m honest, our whole bathroom could stand to be redone, but either one is kind of a big deal because it’s our only shower. We’d love to downsize but this (too big) house is paid for and many of the smaller places we’ve looked at are exorbitant. Anyway, congratulations on the new bathroom and I hope Ali gets to help paint soon!

  2. Like Bonny, I didn’t know tub refinishing was a thing! We have one left in our house, and it’s in Molly’s bedroom. Perhaps we’ll refresh it when she goes to college. It has some rust spots and there are niches in it that clearly need to be recaulked. I’m sure removing all that wallpaper was tedious, but you did an amazing job!

  3. First . . . I gotta say . . . I can’t imagine having anyone in my life who is “chomping at the bit” to come help me paint. 😉 (Lucky you!) Next . . . your bathroom re-do is going to be so awesome! I can’t wait to see the big reveal once the painting is finished. We had a bunch of wallpaper in our house, too, and I removed most of it on my own. I didn’t use a steamer; I used some enzyme removal solution and soaking “mats.” It worked amazingly well. But, basically, removing wallpaper is a MAJOR pain in the ass. And that’s all there is to it! Good for you for getting it done! You must feel great to have that behind you. XO

  4. I think this is going to look fantastic when it is finished! Removing wallpaper has to be about the worst job ever and you did a fantastic job! I am eager to see it all finished.

  5. A bathroom re-do is a BIG deal, this is going to be great when it’s done. And hooray for no more wallpaper! We had it in every room in the house I grew up in and Dale and I had it in most rooms in our house, too. It’s all gone now, though and I can’t picture ever wallpapering again.
