Hip, Hip… Not Hooray!

About two years ago, when the Swiftie Bracelet Factory was in high gear, I had my first appointment with a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). I was having pain in my hip & with the trip to Amsterdam & the Eras Tour Concert on the horizon, I couldn’t imagine hoofing around the city and navigating through concert crowds in that condition. At that time, he said that surgery/a hip replacement was in my future, but we weren’t there just yet. I had a cortisone shot, instead, and it worked incredibly well!

Last year, I had another visit/another shot… that one didn’t work quite as well.

This year… ow! Ow!! OW!!! A long, active weekend in Philly, closely followed by two weeks of dog duty have really taken a toll, not to mention just the overall increased activity that naturally comes with springtime!

I had another appointment on Friday. We’re there.

My right hip (the bad one) on the left; my left hip (the good one) on the right. There should be a little space between the ball & socket of my right hip; instead, it’s bone-on-bone & bone spurs to boot.

I haven’t made a final decision yet, but I’m starting to get my ducks in a row, and we’re maybe looking at July. Stay tuned.

As a palate cleanser (‘cuz, whew, that’s a lot & I cannot dwell)…

Kate recently wrote about NASA’s Landsat Name Generator (marking this year’s Earth Day… which is also Kate’s birthday).

A series of five satellite images showcasing diverse geographical features, including mountains, rivers, valleys, and ice formations. The images illustrate various landscapes from an aerial perspective, highlighting natural patterns and textures.

I could type words into a generator like that all day long! If you hover I love discovering the locations of all those formations — you can click on coordinates to see it on a map.

And it changes! In this version, the V is Lake Cataract in New South Wales — about 4 hours SE of Maddy & Viv!

Have fun!

  1. I so understand why you are dreading surgery! I had one hip replacement pre-pandemic and the other one three years later. Both were very difficult pain-wise for me, but it was well worth it a few months later. I wish you well. It’s different for everyone, my friend was up after one week, no heavy pain meds and going up and down stairs. So you never know. Stay positive 👍

  2. Oh drat about the hip! But I know people who had hip replacements and life post replacement is amazing! (Jillian Moreno had a hip done last year) And NASA!! Oh my! That is just so fun! Thank you and Kate for bringing that to my attention! XO

  3. Sorry about that hip replacement thing but I think you’ll be glad to have done it once you are on the other side. That letter generator thing is so cool, thanks for sharing it.

  4. Oy to the hip replacement but like other commenters, I think you will be glad after you recover. And hip replacements are easier than knee replacements. The letter generator is fascinating.

  5. I’ve had pain in both hips going on 3 years now, but mine is only partially due to arthritis, combined with bursitis. I’ve had 3 cortisone shots with the same results as you (great, meh, relief for about a week) but I’ve found myself wishing that my pain could be remedied with a hip replacement. It hurts all the time and interrupts my sleep. I’m considering trying CBD/THC cream, but we’ll see. I know three people that have had hip replacements and each of them wished they had done it earlier. It’s still daunting major surgery and I hope you can make a choice that’s right for you. (Even I can tell your right hip looks terrible on the x-ray!)

  6. Oh dear! I’m sorry to read this, but agree with everyone that you will be happy once the surgery is done (and recovery too – may it be speedy!!). What a fun link for the letter (or name) generator!

  7. Oh, man. I’m so sorry about your hip. That said, I have many friends who’ve had the surgery (AND DONE THE REHAB, which is key . . . ), and they all wish they’d done it sooner. You, my friend, are active and motivated. I’m gonna bet you’ll be in the no-regrets camp when it’s all said and done. (Keep me posted, okay?) XO
