Unraveled Wednesday: Summer Launch

I had a wonderfully long weekend with just the right amount of busy-ness, socializing, and rest.

A woman and two young girls lying in bed, smiling and posing for a selfie among pillows.

Taking a quick nap w/the girls… though I’m the only one who actually napped.

The weather was pretty great, too.

Close-up of a s'more featuring a broken piece of Hershey's chocolate and graham crackers, with a blurred background.

Ann, Brian & Addie came up for a quick visit Sunday-Monday, Ali & fam were in/out a few times, we made some yummy food, and had fun making s’mores.

I’m joining Kat & the Unravelers for Unraveled Wednesday!

KNITTING:

I’m closing in on the back of Farfalle!

A knitted fabric in brown with colorful geometric patterns, laid out on a table.

I’m continuing the motif all the way up the back, though the designer has that stopping at some point and continuing with just the mosaic garter stitch. I have plenty of the Noro yarn… and I like how it looks. Two fronts shall soon(-ish) commence!

READING:

John of John for as long as I can keep my eyes open every night. I think I’m also going to start listening to it.

QUILTING:

I found some clear stacking drawer units & spent some time folding & organizing my fabric stash. I really need to see things, so this works for me!

The two drawers on top are all fat quarters, with just a few fat eighths & a couple of larger cuts. The middle drawer (with all the dots lined up on the left) is all Kaffe Fassett/Collective, and the top drawer is everything else I’ve collected over the years. There’s an old Craftsy kit occupying the bottom drawer right now (including a jelly roll & a thread collection), but that will likely find another spot as I think all my larger cuts of fabric (mostly Kaffe) will get folded & stored in there. I’m trying to make some room for actual sewing!!

I got together last night with The Tuesday Quilters — everyone in last winter’s sampler class has been itching to get together & work on a new project! I know, I know… there’s still a long way to go on my original project, but I’m really glad I went! One of the women in the group was 2.5 weeks out from hip replacement & doing great — using a cane, off of the hard drugs & even driving. It really made me feel good to see that.

We chose a project, will meet once a month instead of weekly (so it’ll be a little less hectic), and we’ll learn a few new things (hello, curves & strip piecing). Though I love & am tempted by all the colorful fabrics in that middle drawer, I think I might swing the other way for the new project… all those black & white fabrics, perhaps with a bit of red. And I’ll probably stick to “throw” size rather than going off the deep end again. haha.

  1. I can’t wait to see what your quilt group comes up with, project-wise . . . and what your own inspired twist might be. WHAT FUN! It looks like a great summer ahead, Vicki. And I’m so glad you’re able to hear/see a hip replacement recovery in the wild! That will take some of the fear/mystery/trepidation out of the mix. (Maybe?) XO

  2. That sounds like a great weekend and things are always better with s’mores. I’m glad your quilt group got together and you were able to see such positive results of a hip replacement. Driving at 2.5 weeks out and off the hard drugs is impressive! Your new fabric display/storage is impressive and so is your Farfalle. You may have a new sweater just about the time that the weather cools down so you can wear it.

  3. Your fabric looks awesome in those clear shelving units, it’s a feast for the eyes! I store mine in an old bureau and it’s not nearly as inspiring. I love that you have a quilt group now and I’m glad you got to see the after effects of a hip replacement in a positive way!

  4. Oh my! So MUCH in this post Vicki!!! I was reading your blog the other night and attempting to catch up…but I was way too tired to comment at all. Ha! How is it that Davy graduated? Your Farfalle is so gorgeous. And your fabric!!! WOW! A feast for these tired eyes. Like Carole, my fabrics are in a bureau (one that my grandfather made eons ago)…in a way it’s good that I can’t see those fabric pieces all the time or I might never get anything done. So glad you could talk with someone who had a recent hip replacement.

  5. Getting a nap and s’mores sounds like a perfect weekend to me! I’m so inspired by your fabric — I would have a hard time looking at your storage and not pulling out all those pretty prints!

  6. Wow, just wow Vicki! For the odd brief moment I think I am busy, I just need to swing by your blog for a reality check… this is where busy resides! I am excited to see your next quilting foray! You have inspired me… I picked up a season of classes from the Thread House Academy. I am really looking forward to learning new things! And I am 7 days into the 100 Days of Handsewing with the AC crew and loving it! I am working on a varigated stripe scarf and loving it. I am trying new things and having such fun!

  7. The Farfalle looks amazing..and a quilt that is black and white and red allover with your design sense would be gorgeous (and probably fun to make? I am not a quilter however I love vicarious quiltmaking). A friend made a S’mores Casserole for a neighborhood cookout last weekend–it was a huge hit. I think she did it sort of as an experiment/ joke but it was so appreciated she’s already had to make a second one (for a member of my family, not naming names but she’s 14 now and can be very persuasive).
