CROCHET:
I’ve continued using up my Felted Tweed leftovers to make granny squares. Turns out, I’m not doing double crochets, as I thought, and they’re not half double crochets, either — they’re something in between. I relied on memory and, given that my crochet prowess is quite limited, I should have gone for a refresher. By the time I realized that there was an error, I was quite a few squares in. They’re fine, they look like granny squares, they’re not going to fall apart, they’re maybe a little smaller than they “should” be…
It’s now an “exclusive” design… and that’s how it’s gonna be!
There’s a growing stack of squares on my side table. I knocked out at least one more since I took that photo yesterday, so I’m up to 33.
I’m still not quite sure what they’re going to be, though a garment is what I’ve had in mind all along — a vest or a cardigan. JETHRO 
— or a riff thereof — is a strong contender, especially since we’ve been watching a lot of NCIS: Origins (IYKYK).

I’ve had Letters of a Woman Homesteader by Elinore Pruitt Stewart on my nightstand for a while and picked it up last night. I actually slept all night in my own bed last night for the first time in over a month (not sure if that’s permanent yet), so it was right at hand. On the couch, I’ve been making my way through the few copies of Quiltfolk that I have, the articles are informative but concise and there are lots of photos. The nighttime “reading” light at the couch isn’t that great, so it was a better choice than the dense text of a book.

Those felted tweed colors just WORK! Making the same mistake over and over becomes a pattern. Looks great!

My kids thought they had discovered MJ and were surprised when I introduced them to the parodies. I love your original design granny squares! They look grannyish enough to me and this administration hasn’t yet appointed a Dept of Granny Square Police so I think you’re good!

You’re inspiring me to pull out Felted Tweed (I’ve got a LOT) and make granny squares! And who cares if your double crochets aren’t true double crochets, you do YOU!

I just checked out Letters of a Woman Homesteader; it sounds right up my alley. Have you read Women’s Diaries of the Westward Journey by Lillian Schlissel? I read it ages ago while minoring in Women’s Studies. Good stuff.
Those squares are fabulous! I think as long as you like the look of what you’re doing and it’s not hurting, who cares if it’s not standard? Looking forward to seeing what these squares become.
I think those squares look fabulous, Vicki! I am a brand new crocheter and they look perfect to me! (when I thought was doing a “single crochet” edging on a few garments was actually slip stitch…. but it worked! Ha!) Anyways, I have a bag full of Noro odds and ends that I pulled out. I think Autumn and Crochet will be the perfect pairing (and I LOVE that sweater!)
Love the squares !! I think crochet, even more than knitting, is a “there’s no wrong way if it works for you” handcraft. Love the Jethro design (and NCIS reference). I have been wantig to make a granny square cardi for a long time and always get stuck at the sleeves being too squared off and wide, knitting them is a great solution.
Your granny squares are fabulous! Mine…not so much. I started making them a few years back with sock yarn remnants…but they are all different sizes, so not easy to stitch together. They were a good div version at the time and maybe (maybe not) I will get back to them. So many things clamoring for attention!
The granny squares looks great. No one needs to know about your invented stitch. I love the colors of Rowan Felted Tweed and they are beautiful in Granny squares. I have my Mom’s copy of Letters of a Woman Homesteader. She loved that book. I should read it again. Thank you for the sweet memory.
My goodness . . . those Felted Tweed granny squares look DIVINE all lined up like that. And . . . I think there are many options (ahem) when it comes to granny squares, so your riff is just another variation. 😉 And I love that Jethro sweater. I’ve been eyeing it for years . . .
Love the granny squares, however you’ve stitched ’em! I bought yarn for Jethro a year or so ago and have a few squares made. Maybe I’ll get inspired to fish out the WIP & keep going? Definitely inspired to check out NCIS: Origins!
