Saturday-ish Sky

Twenty

I’ve been showing up four days a week at the same time & place for the past 20 years, as of today. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around that for a while… a plant just showed up on my desk that spells it out in black & white, so I guess it’s really true.

My work life has always represented stability. I’ve worked since I was in high school, except for five years after Maddy was born when I was determined to be a SAHM*, but only a handful of jobs/employers. And I’d still be happily working as a typesetter at the Northwoods Shopper, the Bargain Bulletin, the Tillamook County Shopping Guide, or Metro Press if any of them were still a thing** (and where I’d be staring down 50 years in that occupation)! I worked for my dad at the first & third of those jobs, and for the same large family at the second & fourth — and it was connection to that large family that landed me where I am.

I had just discovered knitting blogs 20 years ago, having rediscovered knitting (again), and began blogging myself just a few months later, so the two are very much entwined. When I think about all of the things that have happened in that time — much of which I blogged about (but not all) — it boggles my mind. It actually makes me a little anxious! So here’s a gallery of skies, all taken at work — in the morning, in the evening, or on my walk to the mailbox — the sky is always calming (even when it’s not). Remember Saturday Sky?

I plan to be sitting here for another five years… though, as of the new year, I’ll be cutting back a little. At first, I was going to cut back to three days a week, but 20-year-old habits die hard, so I’m easing in with cutting back to three days every other week. haha. It truly is “a little.” Technically, still full time, but I’ll have a stretch of five days off every other week, alternating with regular weekends off — and that, my friends, is the game-changer. I cannot wait! (It might make cutting back every week a little easier.) (But I like my paycheck, too!)

*It was difficult to get used to not working, but I did get used to it… and I loved it!

Year In Review

Year In Review

Here we go again Year In Review!

I do it in words (the first sentence of the first post of each month) and in pictures (a favorite posted photo from each month) — the two are not necessarily related.

January 2023:

I wish I could say we had a wonderful holiday & a great visit with Kate.

February 2023:

My sister Ann & her family departed for Peru very early this morning.

March 2023:

It’s a very exciting day! Not only do I have an official FO… but we’re also going on a field trip! Step right this way… (to visit Modern Daily Knitting!!).

April 2023:

Ali sent me this photo yesterday with the title of this post as caption: Mom, does this still fit me?

May 2023:

So rude! It snowed most of the morning, then rained for a while. I’m tired of complaining (which makes no difference to management, anyway), so I’ll just leave it at that.

June 2023:

The kids’ official last day of school was Friday.

July 2023:

I will never not welcome a 4-day weekend, but WOW… that was a busy one!!

August 2023:

[Your mission] …should you choose to accept, is to tell me what you think about these specs!*

September 2023:

Sonia’s stocking is finished! It’s my third FO of the year.

October 2023:

Echoing the sentiments of many…. how did we get here so fast??

November 2023:

I don’t usually refer to myself as “old” or “getting old” … but today there’s no denying it! I’m officially on Medicare.

December 2023:

It’s been a while since I celebrated the finish of my first epic knit!

Things seemed more “normal” this year. I’m looking forward to 2024 and some changes!

*I still don’t have new specs!

Holiday chuckles

I didn’t mean to disappear for over a week! Crazy times! A quick trip to the JMKAC Art Preserve in Sheboygan (more later), two trips out to see kids’ Christmas performances, a visit to the dentist (the first of two to replace a crown), meal planning, shopping, house prep, gift wrapping… getting there. Annie arrives today & the boys on the weekend!

I’m popping in briefly to share a couple of gems from a couple of the aforementioned kids.

I’m sure y’all know, but PEAS = PEACE! We’ve insisted that Ali bring that original so we can scan & frame it!

This is Junah’s holiday teacher letter to the SECOND of TWO favorite teachers this year… hence, “second favorite.”

Malina’s letter to her teacher had a big pink heart on it and, I LOVE MY MOM, with a complaint about her younger brother written inside!

Then there’s this little ham on a taco date with his mom yesterday.

I get all the kids overnight tomorrow, then on Saturday we’re having a pasta-making party (also a happy pants dance party, and possibly a dress-up relay), Christmas Eve at my house (the ham is in the house!), and probably a quiet Christmas Day. I can’t believe it’s almost here.

Making a wreath

I stopped off at Annie’s last night to make another wreath. I don’t always love making things twice, but this was definitely an exception. It was so great to know exactly what I needed to do, how to streamline the process a bit, and (especially) to have room to spread out!

Traditionally, the greens are wired onto the wreath frame but we used zip ties. Since I had a specific number of them in my kit, I knew exactly how many bundles I needed to make. We were all fumbling a bit with zip ties + bundles + frame equation at the workshop, so I thought I’d get the zips all “started,” and then I could space them out evenly in the sections of the frame, too.

I put on some Christmas music while I trimmed, stacked, bundled, and zipped! All told, it took less than an hour and it was really fun to do. I put the bow & froo-froo on Ann’s and hung it on her front door.

I have a crappy 6:30 a.m. picture of mine hanging on the garage door. ha.

Weekending

Weekending: More Love/Random

I don’t remember whether I’ve mentioned that Ali is trying the Airbnb route for the apartment above the coffee shop… she (& often Davy) have been spending a lot of time working up there over the past couple of months, and she has been having a blast designing & decorating. She’s getting close enough to listing that I met her up there on Saturday morning to take photos!

I had knowledge of this mural being painted on the side of the building but this is the first time I saw it — and it’s amazing!! The City had grant money available, Ali had a plan, and found a great young muralist to do the deed! I’m sure there are better vantage points — I first spotted it from the car as I was going over the bridge — and I’m going to have to find them. (I drive by here every morning but it’s been DARK, so I haven’t seen it.) FYI: Rusty’s studio is in the area of LOVE and the apartment is back by MORE.

For a few different reasons, I took a pass on the wreath-making workshop that I’ve participated in for the past few years, and didn’t think I’d do a workshop at all this year. Then I saw that there was one right down the street at 313 Dodge on Saturday — and Ali said “let’s go!” Janel (left) owns the venue with her husband, Kristin (right) works there), and they’ve both worked for Ali at the coffee shop in the past, so we all sat at a table together and it was fun to catch up. Also, it was more of a wreath-MAKING workshop as opposed to -DECORATING, which is what I’ve done the past few years (to pre-made wreaths). For this one, we trimmed, bundled & bound our own bunches of greens to a wire form and I’m really happy for that knowledge. I bought an extra “kit” and will be making one for Annie’s house tonight.

Kate spent much of last week in Miami at the art shows, and I picked her up at the airport on Saturday night. She was raring to go on Sunday morning — on a tear about finishing decorating!

So the tree is done (and decorated on all sides), garlands & stockings are hung, decorating is done (I think)… we even went shopping! We were very Target-ed and, I’m happy to say, my shopping is just about done (checking list…) — other than awaiting a couple of deliveries, there’s only one “big” gift yet to procure.

I even wrapped up my Jólabókaflóð gifts and dropped that parcel at the P.O. this morning.

When the kids came over last week for tree decorating, they came right after school, so I listened to/signed off on some reading homework, and witnessed the emptying of the backpacks.

This adorable Pilgrim Ginny emerged and, lemme tell ya, that face is nearly life-size! So cute — and imagining a whole classroom of thankful Pilgrims. Then, I noticed it hanging on the side of the fridge (right across from the laundry room door) and OHMYGOD! It just made/makes me smile so big every time.
