But first…
We got the old girl dressed for the holidays over the weekend… not as crazy as some years! Candy cane stripes, bells, and the front door “lighting array.” I’ll probably concentrate future decorating efforts on the tree — the kids did a great job… but, oh boy, is it ever lopsided! There are a bunch of “precious” ornaments to hang that they’re not allowed to handle yet, too.
(Salvaged bricks & blocks are stacked along the left side of the front door entrance for reconstruction of the terrace path from sidewalk to street next spring. Can’t wait!)
KNITTING:
I’m knitting Sarah Schira’s mystery gnome again this year. I haven’t knit a gnome in a while, and it seemed like a good time. I love the nice ‘n easy pace of her December MKALs. There’s a little something everyday, but not always knitting… allowing slow starters & busy people a chance to catch up.
I may have knit two arms, so far, along with a pouch of some sort, a couple of pieces that have me stumped, and currently something reminiscent of a witch’s hat… but we shall see how it all goes together!
READING:
Still in a slump. Annie suggested a few books the other day, including The Princess Bride, which I’ve never read (nor have I seen the movie). Have any of you read it?
I did make GREAT progress on some gifts over the past couple of days — photo calendars & books for specific people. THAT feels good.

Oh, I can’t wait to see your gnome, Vicki! Sarah’s gnomes always turn out so well, and look like so much fun to knit. (I’m always tempted to join in myself. Maybe someday. . . ) Love your exterior decor. So nice and festive! XO
I bought the gnome KAL for the first time this year – and some yarn to knit it. Then I got caught up in a bunch of other stuff (including starting another gnome from stash while I waited for the KAL to start, haha) so haven’t started it yet. I tend to agree about the pacing so far– looks totally doable even for us late starters. I plan to wind my yarn tonight. I can’t recall whether I’ve read TPB, but if you haven’t the film WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? It’s a longtime favorite here. If you’re looking for fun nonfiction, I recommend Cary Elwes book As You Wish, about the making of TPB. We went to his show when he was touring in support of the book. So fun!
I’m in the Snow Matter What gnome knitting process, too, and it’s great fun. It’s my first time doing this and I’m really glad I joined. I’m not quite finished with the thing that looks like a hat! Your house is looking properly festive. We still have the garage wreath to hang and the lights around the garage doors to put up but otherwise we’re done outside. I’m hoping to tackle the last of the indoor trees this weekend.
I look forward to seeing your gnome come together. John scraped (very thoroughly) and painted our porch columns this summer so I’m not allowed to put up the candy cane stripes on them this year. I don’t like doing all eight of our columns but I will miss them!
And a big, enthusiastic yes to Princess Bride! I read the book first and then saw the movie, and they’re both great. Fun, funny, full of memorable lines, and I think the movie is fine for the kids.
I thought I was the only person alive who hadn’t seen the Princess Bride. I hope these fans don’t talk you into seeing it or then I will be the only one! And yes, your house looks lovely.
I have my door wreath to hang yet, but the outside lights are done (as is the inside decorating!) I have never read (or seen) Princess Bride. Maybe it’s time? 🙂

I’ve seen “The Princess Bride,” but haven’t read the book. My son is a big fan of them both.
I love watching your mystery gnome progress. and another newbie for the Princess Bride, but I’ve heard great things about the movie, the book, and the book As You Wish about the making of the movie (Carl Reiner does the foreword). My library doesn’t have the audio, or I would’ve listened years ago!
Trying to catch up on your posts! So rusty is back home now (since he and Kate put up the tree). You and he certainly had epic trips!! Your house looks great and Malina – I love how she seems to love ALL the handknits. The polar bear! And then your post on Parcheesi – what a project!! Now it seems like a whirlwind to Christmas Day.
