Weekending: Change of Plans

My Friday plans with Malina were thwarted & I need to reschedule — dates with both her & Ginny. So, instead, I had a quiet Home Alone Pajama Day & another very productive day in my workroom.

Several months ago, I bought tickets to attend a Green Bay Gamblers hockey game, with the thought that Junah might enjoy it — and that date came up on Saturday. I picked him up at noon and we headed up to Lambeau Field for lunch & a quick visit to the Pro Shop.

The Lombardi Trophy

Then we went over to a nearby barbershop where I’d made an appointment for a much-needed haircut!

The kid cleans up pretty good! He kept saying, “I love my hair!”

From there, we stopped at a Target… for pomade (and maybe a LEGO set), so he can style it just like his barber, Julian, did!

We still had a couple of hours before the puck dropped, so went over to the Neville Public Museum.

Some of the exhibits haven’t changed since we took the kids in the ’90s.

We had fun looking at some of the collections… random stuff like political buttons, cameras, shoes, clothing & hats, watches, toys, and an actual “redcoat.” There were a couple of art exhibits, and some more science-y exhibits, too, and an impressive model of Lambeau Field made from LEGO.

We found some awesome rainbow socks to go along with the new Nikes that we found (on clearance) at the Packers Pro Shop. Stylin’!

Then it was time to head over to the Resch Center for the hockey game. It was the first for both of us… and totally my idea. I’ve wanted to attend a hockey game ever since I saw LOVE STORY in 1970… so, bucket list item for me.

And, it was SUPER MARIO NIGHT, so something of interest for Junah, too.

We had great seats — Row C — and there was a lot of action! It was interesting to see where all the players were from — Ukraine, Sweden, Germany, many from various Canadian provinces, and the US, of course (MN, MI, NJ, MA mostly, it seemed) — and they were all super young, most about 20.

There was a huge brawl! I was struck by the aftermath of sticks & helmets strewn across the ice — I wasn’t quick enough with my phone, and some had already been picked up when I snapped this shot (including a broken stick). Anyway, I overhead someone behind us saying, “I knew that was going to happen when the goalie got sprayed — doesn’t matter if it was intentional or not.” And it was an immediate reaction — all of a sudden there were all after each other, the four refs were trying to pry apart players, I saw on replay that one guy practically pulled the shirt off another. It was something else! Luckily, there was no blood or any injury during the game.

Alas, the gamblers lost by one point in OT, but it was super fun & affordable & I’d definitely go again!

  1. I do love hockey; glad you got to take in a game.

There’s something kind of comforting about things that we saw/did with our children.

  2. Junah has grown up! We do see occasional photos of him, so maybe it’s his new haircut that makes him look older. What a great time you had and I hope your rescheduled time with Ginny and Malina is just as much fun!

  3. What a fun time for YOU and Jun! (His haircut is GREAT!) And my Sam asked if you liked hockey… he said the Lakers team are amazing to watch and there is a minor league team there as well!

  4. Wow, Vicki – so much fun! Junah looks so grown up – I guess double digits and a haircut will do that?! and how cool that you got to share your first hockey games with each other.

  5. Okay. Trying again. (My first comment had something . . . weird . . . happen during posting? Maybe you’ve received it? Maybe not.) Anyway. I’ll not repeat myself except for one thing . . . As a long-time hockey fan and hockey-mom, I’ll just tell you that when there is a fight like that – with equipment strewn everywhere on the ice – it is referred to as a YARD SALE. 😉

  6. It sounds like you and Junah had a really fun day together! I’ve never been to a hockey game except for when I was little and I was dragged to the rink to watch my brothers play. Love the socks and new sneakers and the haircut looks great!

  7. You must be the best Grandmother ever!! You always do such fun things with the kids. Echoing everyone else – Junah has grown up!!! His haircut looks great and love his new socks and sneakers. Glad you both had such a fun day!
