Weekending

Weekending

I spent the entire weekend at home… the furthest I ventured was to the trash/recycling bins!

I posted a similar photo on IG yesterday… this is the wide-angle view! This is where I spent most of my time. It may not look like it, but there was a lot of progress made! It’s a classic case of “it’s gonna get worse before it gets better.” The main thing is that I can see (mostly) unobstructed paths to areas that I need to access.

Stuff — including a lot of yarn — is heading out the door to various locations. I’m not focused on sorting the yarn (yet) but it’s happening along the way. I’ve frogged or otherwise disposed of some very old projects, thereby reclaiming yarn, needles, project bags & totes.

It’s funny how I have avoided getting into spinning for 20+ years, citing the lack of time & space & whatever, but have been so easily captured by other endeavors… that also take up time & space & whatever. Hand sewing? Yeah. Letterpress printing? Oh yeah. (And I can build my own little press, too? Hell yeah!) (And collect old type? Yippee!) Bookmaking? Quilting? Collage? Photography? I know I’m forgetting at least 10 things.

All work & no play makes for a very grumpy me, even when the work is quite fulfilling! So there was plenty of knitting on Ali’s blanket panel, too. There’s about five weeks to go!

I’ll continue plugging away at my workroom, but tonight I’m heading straight out to Ali’s after work to babysit, which should be fun! Next weekend I’m heading to Minneapolis for a few days, but it’s a l-o-n-g weekend, so I’ll still have a couple of days at home to putter… and start clearing off that big table.

Hope you had a great weekend!

TGIF!

Tuning in…

I’ve been loving Spotify’s “daylist” — made just for me (or you) — there’s usually a theme based on the type of music you listen to & the list changes every few hours (one morphs into another)! Yesterday was heavy on ’90s. I’m amused by the playlist titles… “cozy granola vibes tuesday early morning,” “outlaw country red dirt tuesday afternoon,” “sensational 80s evening,” “soft soul flannel friday morning.”

Getting ready…

Registrations are complete. Campsite has been reserved. We’re on for another Peninsula Century Fall Challenge in Door County! It isn’t until September, but it feels good to have that all set.

So there’s another summer of cycling coming up. We briefly contemplated the Spring Classic again, but June… man, things are ramping up around here in June!

Inspired by…

Ginny/Virginia! Alison subbed as the leader of Art Club at the kids’ school yesterday, and sent us this picture last night. “There was one circle on this sheet as the drawing prompt for a contest in art club.”

I may be biased, but I think we’re looking at the winner right there! Ginny’s obviously still pretty into planets.

Finally…

February! I can’t believe we’re heading into the final week. It’s usually such a slog, but I think our incredibly (unsettlingly) mild weather has helped to make it less so… a contributing factor, anyway. We were close to mid-50s (F) yesterday and the forecast shows a day next week in the 60s! Today it’s 33. heh. Just can’t help but feel that we’re going to get it (a ton of snow) at some point. March or April? May? We’ve had snow in May but never a ton, at least in my memory.

Anyway. Happy Friday, y’all! Have a great weekend.

Family Temperature Blanket · Unraveled Wednesday / Knit & Read

Unraveled Wednesday

Today I’m joining Kat & the Unravelers for Unraveled Wednesday!

KNITTING:

I’ve been working on Ali’s blanket panel and making progress!

Rusty’s, Vicki’s, Katie’s, Ali’s… I’ll start Maddy’s soon!!

There’s been further progress since I took the photo yesterday afternoon. It’s winter, and I LOVE those cool colors… makes for exciting knitting!

There used to be room enough to lay the panels on the walkway outside the back door, but the blanket is too wide now. The only place big enough is the driveway… right out in front of the house… it’s always a little funny to style & take photos “in public,” but I risked it! I live at the end of a dead-end street, so chances were pretty slim that I’d be seen, anyway. And who even cares?? haha.

I realized the other day that I’m nearing the downhill slide on this project — one panel to go (and sewing up) (and a border). Maddy’s is the last one… and you know who’s going to be home this summer!? Suddenly, I’m very motivated to get this blanket finished by then!

It’s soon to be early Spring on Ali’s panel!

This is where it (the data visualization) gets even more exciting to me. Kate was born in April 1985 and Ali in April 1987; their birthdays are six days apart. Kate’s first year was spent on the Oregon Coast, while Ali spent her first year in Northeast Wisconsin. I felt like Kate had a bit more of a “curve” than Ali, but I just compared the charts and they’re pretty spot-on — still, just look at those temperatures! We always talk about how Ali’s summer was so hot… interesting to compare to mine, though, which was also spent mostly in NE Wisco — I think there was just no relief in the summer of ’87! I can’t wait to get Maddy’s data in there. She was born in April 1991, nine days after Ali’s birthday.

More weekending

It wasn’t ALL cleaning & organizing — as good as it is to get to that task.

On Friday, Kate & I nabbed the kiddos (who were off of school for some reason unknown to us) and took them out to lunch. We were headed to Chili’s, talking about what we were hungry for, and all of a sudden it seemed like SPAGHETTI was on everyone’s mind… so we veered over to Olive Garden, instead.

Everyone (age 10 & under) ordered… macaroni & cheese!! Ha, a couple of them had spaghetti as their side — one of them ate only the spaghetti & the other only the mac & cheese.

It was pretty mild weather-wise all weekend, so did a little hiking.

Camp Winnecomac – where I went to day camp as a Girl Scout Brownie – borders the 1000 Islands Environmental Center “Upper Woods” Trail. We may have trespassed there — trails were not very well marked & it was hard to tell if we were on a people trail or a deer trail (we saw many deer). Maddy worked as a counselor there (and at other GS camps) when she was in college.
Hecktrodt Wetland Reserve – eager to watch as spring starts springing (not holding my breath)
.

When I left work on Thursday, I made another stop at the lighting store. I’ve had a hole in the middle of my living room ceiling for about two years now… could even be three. Rusty disconnected & buried a box up there years ago when we re-did the ceiling (exchanging acoustic tiles for sheetrock). When I had an electrician here a while back for some other things, I said, HEY, let’s see if you can find that box… He couldn’t, but Rusty later did, also locating the wire for the switch (i.e., he remembered what he did).

This trip to the lighting store was the charm… I narrowed it down to two fixtures, I just needed to get a sense of size/scale in the room. So, here’s me holding a 22″ circle near the ceiling. I think it’s going to be perfect! That whole wall behind me is going to get a complete re-do one of these days — some of that stuff has to go, but there are other things I’ll never part with (they just need to find a new home).

Obviously, I am in no rush when it comes to buying new light fixtures or redecorating.

I had my car in for maintenance yesterday — oil change, tire rotation, and all new hoses! I love that my service place is in easy walking distance, and I walked on the brand new sidewalk across the street on the way home. There’s never been sidewalk there at all… so that was different.

I spent a few hours today at Ann’s finishing up laundry & doing some knitting on my Musselburgh hat… I have a little bit to rip & re-do, but I think it’s going to be great! I’ll probably have something to show next week.

Here’s a sneak peek at what’s coming up in tomorrow’s Unraveled Wednesday post:

A temperature blanket update!

Weekending

Weekending…

…continues, and not because it’s Presidents’ Day! I’m on Day 4 of one of my 5-day weekends and I’ve spent quite a bit of it in my workroom. Cleaning, organizing, tossing. There is still plenty to do. I’m not sure anyone would notice the difference from a few days ago, but I do, and it’s motivating me to continue.

Among the things unearthed is a vintage “easy care” sheet.

I bought it at a shop or sale with the idea of dresses for the girls. It just so happens that Ali will be sewing dresses for the girls soon and this fabric will be among the choices! I’m throwing it in the washer momentarily.

And getting back to work!
