Alison

I’m not sure how it’s possible that my middle child was born 39 years ago, but here we are.

A father cradles a newborn baby while a toddler sits next to him, sipping a drink through a straw. The photo includes handwritten notes with ages and dates.

Sigh.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ALI!!!

Three young children playing at a kitchen table, one holding a toy figurine and a spoon, another smiling with a spoon, and the third holding a small toy. Various cups and bowls are visible on the table.

It’s birthday season around here. Kate’s is on Wednesday — she’ll be celebrating in Edinburgh! Maddy’s is a week from Saturday. Rusty shared this photo in our family group chat the other day, and we all noted the BEST TEA canister, which is in use as a sugar canister now as it was then, though almost all of the paint has worn off. And our COFFEE MUGS! I have a replacement, but Rusty’s is original and still in use, though also devoid of paint (except for the heart). We still use a Depression Glass butter dish in that design (behind the tea/sugar canister), but that green one broke a long time ago, and the same coverless green sugar bowl as a spoon jar. The dish/bowl that Maddy’s oatmeal (?) is in was part of a set that I was given when Katie was born… and, yep, it’s still in the cupboard & used regularly. My mom sewed Ali’s flannel nightgown — and one for Kate (in fact, this might be Kate’s handed-down) — and matching gowns for their Cabbage Patch dolls! My mom did so much sewing for Sharon, Karen & me when we were around this age, but I think those nightgowns were her last hurrah.

Lots of memories in 39 years… and here’s to many more!

  1. What joy!!! Happy celebrations!
It was the green Tupperware cup with the sippy lid that caught my eye… (We didn’t call them sippy cups. Did anyone, then?) Ours were orange. (surprise.)
Love that so much there is still in the rotation today!

  2. Happy Birthday, Ali! I hope she has a great day and a wonderful year ahead. I love hearing about all the things you still have and use and what condition they’re in. “Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without!”

  3. I love how you recorded everyone’s age (down to the day) in that first photo! I had those Tupperware sippy cups, too. I also had a Cabbage Patch doll growing up but no one to sew me and my doll matching nightgowns — your girls were pretty lucky that they did. Happy birthday to Ali!

  4. So much WONDERFUL in those photos! Thanks for sharing such heartfelt memories. (And those Tupperware sippy-cups and plastic bowls! Were we all just assigned a set when we had our first child????) I love that the heart is still there on Rusty’s mug.
Happy birthday to Ali — and to YOU, Vicki. (I always think my kids’ birthdays are also MY birthdays . . . ) XO
