It’s crazy to think that I dropped Rusty off at O’Hare almost 24 hours ago to begin his journey to Australia… and, as of now (noon) he still has almost four hours in the air until touching down in Sydney!

We stopped for lunch on the way down. We were headed to one place but Outback was right in front of us, so we went there, and didn’t even realize it until we sat down & cracked a menu, noticing our surroundings, that we were at OUTBACK… as in shrimp on the barbie, Australia, and THE Outback. What a happy chance and fun way to start the trip.

Almost home…

Ooof. It was a very long day for me. I made a planned stop at IKEA on the south side of Milwaukee on the way home but skipped Trader Joe’s… even though for the first time in my life I actually had a cooler & ice packs with me. Timing was not in my favor and it would have been full-on rush hour by the time I got out of there. No thanks. I was stuck in slow/stop/go traffic enough, with traffic, wrecks, and construction still in full swing — enough that I set my GPS to “avoid highways” and took a little detour. I wound up on Hwy 57, which is the way I’d always go to/fro Milwaukee to visit Sharon when she lived there, and it’s probably been 20 years since I was on some of that stretch. There were a few more traffic signals in Plymouth than I remember!

And now, something to draw a seasonal smile…

Ali sent us this photo this morning, “Guess which one is Malina’s?”
(There are some pretty great pumpkins in that group!)

Given all the art & music influences in their everyday lives, it’ll be interesting to see what these kids end up doing in life… what a joy to have a front-row seat!

Tiny Needle Tuesday · Weekending

Mid-October

The MDK class with Lorilee Beltman was VERY good and I learned a number of things — including tips & tricks — to make stranded knitting less intimidating! Lorilee is an excellent teacher. And I will knit Latvian mittens (that fit & are symmetrical)… someday!

The kids & I had so much fun!

Painting is serious business!
Davy’s work.
Ginny made the cat & pumpkin pictures. Davy’s are the 2nd from right, both rows. The rest are all Malina’s!

Davy wants to be part of everything these days!

Pumpkin!
I love the expressiveness! Davy made the one with the goatee, and the one to the right of it. In addition to the garland, there’s a pumpkin on the kitchen window frame and a few on the staircase — Ginny’s decorating.

Ginny & Junah discovered a few small holes in the air mattress when we inflated it, and I patched them, but it wasn’t enough. Davy needed a little comforting at 4am and I noticed that Jun & Gin were basically sleeping on the floor with big poofs of mattress on either side of them! I inflated it a few times on Saturday morning for movie watching, and they had a LOT of fun playing on it as it deflated… and then I tossed it. Junah expressed some concern that no air mattress = no more sleepovers, but I assured him that another would soon be on its way. (It was delivered yesterday! Same brand & pretty much the same price that I paid over four years ago.)

Tiny Needle Tuesday!

And now, something that I haven’t done in AGES!

It’s the start of The Harvest Dance. Those tree branches have to extend a bit more on either side and there will be a lot more leaves & acorns. If there’s a “boring” part of this design, that’s it.

Little owl.

I’m probably going to replace the words “Fancey Blackett” with a repeat of the motif on either side of it all the way across, maybe with some color play. I’m charmed by the name, but also find it distracting.

I am using a lighted magnifying lamp to make this work easier on the eyes. It gets in the way & I bump it once in a while, but I can’t imagine doing this without magnification (at least not while I’m also watching TV or talking to people).

I haven’t knit very much in the past week, but I did place an order for a few colors of Felted Tweed that were running low. I’ll be back to the blanket in no time.

TGIT

Yeah! This particular Thursday is my Friday! I’m ready.

I took this photo at 6:15 the other night and I guess that’s “dusk,” because the pergola lights came on!

Leaves are starting to fall and gather, but you can see that we have a long way to go before the branches are bare. We’ve slowly started cleaning up the yard. And by “we,” I mostly mean Rusty.

On “real” Friday (tomorrow), I’ll be tidying my workroom so it’s presentable while I’m ZOOMing with Modern Daily Knitting & Lorilee Beltman. Kym sang Lorilee’s praises a while back (MDK summer camp & previous experience), so when the workshop for the Treeline Cowl came up — basically a class in stranded knitting — I bit. Colorwork, other than stripes & slipped stitch patterns, has always been such a challenge for me, so I’m looking forward to “tips & tricks” portion of the program. I got the class handout the other day and was impressed with how thorough & organized it was… and I’ve completed all my homework!

The kiddos are coming for a sleepover tomorrow! It’s been a while… we’ll be testing whether my patch job on the air mattress holds after Davy (the little sneak) stabbed it a few times with my little unicorn scissors the last time they were over.

Reminder to self: GET THOSE TEMPTING LITTLE TRINKETS OUT OF REACH!

The rest of the weekend will probably be all about laundry. haha.

Unraveled Wednesday / Knit & Read

Unraveled Wednesday: Alison

I’m joining Kat & the Unravelers today for Unraveled Wednesday!

KNITTING:

Oh boy, these last two panels (Ali’s & Maddy’s) are going to be a labor of love…

Ali’s first month & a half

It seems like there are soooo many color changes! Made me wonder, more than once, if a color for every 10 degrees would have been better than for every five… … but that would be BORING!

Good progress last night — around 20 more ridges/days

Yep! It was a very hot spring/summer!

It’s so dark in the morning now when I leave for work that I had to bring my knitting to work and snap a photo in the parking lot before heading in!

I am really in a slump.

Tiny Needle Tuesday

Fancey that

We stopped at a couple of thrift/resale shops over the weekend and I found a small collection of cross-stitch patterns… one of which I just could not resist!

The dancing witches & squirrels! The pumpkins, the crows, the corn!

It has been AGES since I threaded a needle and picked up a piece of linen — there are a couple of pieces I’d like to get back to — and this might get me going in that direction.

Vera may have some company on Tiny Needle Tuesdays!
